Wow world it has been over two years since my last blog, it’s amazing how time flies!!! Well first and foremost, I want to apologize for the hiatus and tell everyone that I will give the most effort humanly possible to keep blogging on a consistent basis. I understand that sometimes life takes a hold of us and we caught up in the daily grind, but that is never an excuse. Effort is something that does not cost anything but time and energy, and I truely appreciate having this blog as an outlet to express my ideas, concerns, thoughts and feelings to the masses. So with that being said, whats new with your boy Handy???

As some of you may know me personally and for those who don’t, over the last couple of years, I have gotten married to my lovely wife Thelma (that’s such an old name haha) and we are expecting our first son in November!! I really wanted to have a daughter, but God wanted different for me so I’m not upset. My oldest son Isaiah was valedictorian of his 5th grade class and is now ready to tackle the new beast called “middle school”. Me and my wife are moving out of our home of the last six years into somewhere bigger because of the oncoming baby. Also, my “blogger in crime” Puff has a one year old daughter! Don’t tell him I told y’all it’s a secret, SShhh!!! As you can see, this is just some of the changes for us over the last couple of years. It has been a time full of surprises to say the least. What Happened to the Real?

Good day world, it’s your man Handy, one half of the BLWNL crew back at it with another blog. I hope everyone that blesses their eyes on our blogs are in good spirits and everything is well in your life. Now that we got the formalities out of the way, let’s start getting to the topic at hand: What Happened to the ReaL?

I was actually going to blog about another topic, but recent current events made this topic jump o the forefront of my mind. So let’s talk about it shall we?

So I have an IPhone and on it is an application called GroupMe. Shout out to the folks who created this app that should also be known as AIM 2.0. Pretty much its just a group messaging application. But the beauty of it is it crosses the boundaries of phones. Whether a Galaxy, IPhone or Blackberry. As long as your phone is a smartphone you can use the application. This allows you to keep in contact with multiple people that may not be in your area. This instant messaging also allows you to talk to multiple people at once in a group chat. You can also direct message specific people in the group without the whole group seeing. Plus you can post pics in the group chat. Its actually a great idea. Im giving you this info to give you a picture of the scenario.

Now imagine if you have a person who has a gf/bf, fiancé/fiancée, or wife/husband. You would expect themselves to govern themselves accordingly. Especially if they are involved in a groupme chat with single people. What they do and say within the group isn’t necessarily what that person can or will do. Now imagine if that same person thats involved carry themselves as if they are single also. The trouble they can eventually get themselves in could be catastrophic. Especially if there are people within the group that may know their significant other. Anyway that’s not really what this blog is about, just painting a scenario for y’all.

What happened to the real? I see a lot of fakes and phonies in my daily basis, especially with men. I mean there are a lot of fake woman, but I believe that is a direct correlation with the fake men they deal with on a regular basis. Men out here living whole double lives like it’s cool and it’s not. You can’t be engaged today and trying to hit everything moving out here. You can’t have a wife and kids at home and turn around and tell your side chick to have an abortion because you not ready for kids. You can’t say your single knowing you live with your significant other. Men lie, woman lie, everybody lies but it’s getting ridiculous now. Dudes out here lying to women that arent their girls about things they dont have to lie about. What part of the game is this??!!

When I was growing up, I was taught as a very young man, all you had was your word if nothing else at all. Somewhere in the recent years, that has gotten lost with our black men. And it has affected the way black women interact with us. My co-blogger and I always discuss how woman act towards men based off their previous experiences and even though we don’t agree, we now understand the fairness woman display towards men.

I’ve had many of my female friends joke, “He prob got a wife, 3 kids and a dog at home talking about he single” Back in the day this wouldn’t even be taken seriously. Nowadays you gotta do research because it might be true. People wonder why marriages are failing at an epic rate and I relate that directly to not being real. Whether that’s who you truely are as a person or what’s your status as a person, either way just keep it real. I come from an era where if someone questioned your realness, someone might end up dying real rap. I know a couple of people in prison today because they kept it real. Now you call someone out on their fakeness and they brush it off like it’s nothing.

Hopefully if you are a person who performs these actions on a daily basis and reading this, please reconsider your actions. It cost nothing to be honest and keep it real, but it could cost you everything to be a fake, phonie and liar. Please stop making it hard out on these streets for a real man like myself. Until next time world be blessed and be great, I’m out.

Good world, what’s going on? This is your man Handy back on it with another blog for the masses. Black History Month for 2014 have not necessarily been the best for me, but there is always March around the corner haha!!! But let’s end off the month right by making sure we hit a Black History topic all of us can relate. Nigga, nigga, nigga, nigga!!! My nigga, your nigga, everyone a nigga!!! (In my Katt Williams voice) Say it with me one time!!!!! Let me take time to all my NIGGAS in the world.

Sounds like I’m out of control right now. Sounds like I am trying to offend some people right? Being a black man in America, do you now give me a pass? Is it now okay for me to just throw the word everywhere and anywhere. If I were a middle aged white man, would you be outraged and angered? Would you want my blog taken down from the Internet? If I were a young Spanish woman, would you be confused on how to feel? Would you be indifferent about me using the word? These are all different questions that we as a society ask ourselves when referencing the use of the N word.

What’s good free world? It’s one half of the duo ready to hit y’all in the head with another post. After some discussion with my right hand man, we figured we should try to write a post geared more towards our female readers. I know as young black men, we sometimes get caught up seeing the world through only our Ray Bans. But we also know that’s it’s a whole other world when looked through a woman’s eyes. So with that out the way let’s get down to business.

Quick question ladies who would you rather be Mary Jane or Olivia Pope? If you don’t know who these ladies are as a black woman in America, you must obviously live under the rock. But for those living in the caves, Mary Jane and Olivia Pope are lead fictional characters on award winning dramas on national television. Basically the shows chronicle the everyday lives of the two ladies, the ups, the downs, the lows, the highs and everything in between. I think the concept of the shows are unique in the sense that they have black women being the lead characters. Lately I have been asking women that I have come across who would they rather be in real life Mary Jane or Olivia Pope and so far I have been getting back mixed answers. (more…)

Prizms and Prisons

Hey everybody, sorry for the hiatus but the Handyman is back in full effect. Guaranteeing more posts at a more consistent rate is my goal for year 3 of BLWNL. As my co-blogger and brother from another have previously written, it is wonderful that we have followers who challenge us to stay more consistent with our writing. Not only does it show that you all truly enjoy reading our blogs, but it’s motivation to keep on feeding the streets with jewels of knowledge from two of the most intellectual coons you will find haha. Now that the pleasantries are out of the way, let’s get to the nitty gritty.

So I have begun a new job a few months back that has me inside of prisons 5 days a week. Luckily my job is easy, all I have to do is bring the commisary, give it to the inmates and go back home. At times it can be stressful, but for the most part the inmates are pretty cool. I respect all the officers that have to work day in and day out inside of a prison. It can really change your outlook on life and change the way you view the world. This leads me to an interesting conundrum. Many men I have had discussions with in prison often regret the decisions that put them there in the first place. Many of them feel that they view themselves as a totally different person today than they did the day they first walked into prison.

Do you know what a prism does? It’s a medium that misrepresents whatever is seen through it. In layman terms, it distorts whatever image is put in front of it. Whether it’s splitting white light into colors or reshaping an apple’s reflection in front of it. It changes the way you will view the image, almost like those funny mirrors you find at carnivals. Inmates are prisms in prisons. More effectively, inmates remind me of prisms because of the way they are viewed by the outside world.

On the outside, they are robbers, murderers, drug dealers, etc. This is the view that we have of them originally, just first looking at the inmate. But once you get a better understanding of them, you learn that these are human beings. Men and women with real feelings and emotions and knowledge and regret. That original image of caged animals that you may have of them no longer exist. And under all that hard exterior, you find a lot of times a fragile person afraid of shattering to pieces trying to serve their time. This is another aspect that makes a prisoner a prism to me.

Prisms are very delicate because they are usually made of glass. As everyone knows, glass breaks and cracks very easily. The same can be said about inmates. They are very fragile while they are inside of prisons. One mistake can change their whole life, and because of lot of them know that, they are very careful of how they carry themselves. They understand the delicacy of their situation and most of them will go through hell and high water to prevent it from breaking and shattering. But the beautiful thing about a prism is that when white light passes through it, it can change white light to the colors of the rainbow.

The rainbow can represent the finish line for the inmate. It can represent the end for the inmate. Or more importantly, it can represent the final change of an inmate. Prisms can either distort the image of a person or it can change light into rainbows. It can show the person the final change it became, and realistically it can be a beautiful change. You know the beautiful thing about rainbows: they come at the end of a rainy day. So after all that dreadful weather, still there is something beautiful at the end of the day to look forward to.

So I challenge all of those who currently know an inmate or don’t personally know an inmate, understand that everyone’s situation is different and unique. Even though they are currently prisms of themselves in prison, hopefully in due time they will become the beautiful creatures that The Lord created them to be. Prisms and prisons have a lot more in common and are lot more linked than we may think. With that being said, don’t just strive to be good everyone, strive to be great. Peace love and blessings until next time.

Hey new world, your man Handy is back in full affect. Like me and my ace boon coon would say, I’m back like I never left baaabbaaayyy!!!!! I’m speaking for both of us when I say we will make a more concerted effort to bang out these blogs more often. How we have been doing lately this year has been unacceptable!! I take full responsibility for that and promise that I will do better!! Now that the pleasantries are out the way, lets get to the meat of the blog.

Dream Big and Stay Humble!!! Now when you see this, most people will say that this is obvious, but I mean something deeper than what you may think.

In the bible it states, (more…)

As my co-blogger just wrote about the image of young black males in his most recent post, as I’m writing this blog today, I express my frustration with these supposed laws in Florida made to protect the everyday American, but has become something to shackle Americans. The Stand Your Ground law and the gun laws created in Florida are just now receiving national attention due to the cases of Trayvon Martin and Marissa Alexander. In case Marissa Alexander doesn’t ring a bell to you, she is a 32 year old mother of 2 who fired a warning shot in her home to keep her abusive husband away from her. Based on the current gun laws of Florida, if you fire a gun with the intent to harm a person, you automatically get 20 years in prison. So right now, Marissa Alexander is currently serving a 20 year sentence in prison without the possibility of parole.

So in the literal sense of the law it did its job right? Now take into account (more…)

“Shorty just text me, say she wanna sex me LOL :-)” A couple of words from the Trey Songz hit titled “LOL Smiley Face”. Even though that song is a couple of years, it signified the change in our culture. We went from using our cell phones and telephones as a way to talk to people we care about and loved to not using telephones at all and only using cell phones to send quick messages such as text messages. It’s even gotten to the point where we use abbreviations to make the message even quicker. Lol, brb, imo, wyd, etc… these are all examples of letter phrases used in the place of words to make sending the message easier for the user. And now with all mobile phone carriers allowing unlimited text as part of their plans, it doesn’t look like we will ever go back to the days of dialing numbers to speak to friends and families.

Yes I will admit, (more…)

A famous quote from the movie Training Day came from Ethan Hawke who played Officer Jake Hoyt. While having a convo with fellow Officer Alonzo Harris played by Denzel Washington and a drug dealer named Roger, he says “It’s all about smiles and cries. Yeah. You gotta control your smiles and cries, because thats all you have and nobody can take that away from you.” Now at that moment he was making reference to figuring out the streets, but after further thought, I feel like that could be applied to other aspects of life. It’s very true that you must learn to sometimes hide your feelings and release them when you feel as though the timing is appropriate. But what I am seeing and learning more and more nowadays is that sometimes it isn’t a good thing to always hide or control your smiles and cries. That its cool to release those feelings, because those same feelings might be the death of you if left unnoticed.

What do you believe in? That is a question that I have asked people many times in my life. It’s funny the amount of different questions that you receive in return when you ask it though? Why did u ask me that? What do u mean what do i believe in? Are you asking me do I believe in God? It’s quite puzzling to me actually how confused people are by the question. But back to the question: what do you believe in? Do you believe in people? And how do you know if you truly believe in it? I’m here to challenge you today to truly figure that out.

I guess what i am really interested in knowing (more…)
